Understanding and Treating Problem Behavior Workshop

For our last SPLASH meeting, Dr. Cicero and Dr. Conners gave a workshop on problem behavior in the school system. The workshop cleared up several misconceptions of problem behavior and provided four possible functions behind some common problem behavior. The workshop also provides information on  indirect assessments used to determine the functionality of the behavior and explains the contingencies behind creating an effective treatment plan.

The two assessments used were the MAS and FAST. Both assessments can taken by anyone who works with the child. Both are subjective and non time consuming

End of the year – 2017

Hello all,

I hope everyone is enjoying the beginnings of summer.  Please find some notes below about the end of the semester:

NASP

If you are interested in submitting a poster, paper or workshop for the NASP convention in February of 2018, you need to submit your abstract and summary proposal before Monday, June 19th. Check in with Dr. Mass so he can guide you through the process.  Doing some research in an area of interest and presenting at NASP looks great on your resume and makes you more desirable when you start interviewing for jobs and/or applying to doctoral programs.

Newsletter

The students involved in putting the Newsletter together. Please let Dr. Mass know so he can give you the pictures and last year’s newsletter as a template. The newsletter is very easy to do and should take you no longer than an hour.

ABA Track School Psych Students

Students taking the ABA track along with the school psychology track, please use your time-management skills when working on assignments, doing practica, and satisfying all the requirements of both programs. If you are also working, Dr. Mass would suggest you cut down on an area that can wait. For example, you may want to do the school psych. program over 5 years instead of 4 years or you may want to wait until after you graduate from the school psych program to do your practica requirements for the ABA program. Please check in with Dr. Massarelli, Dr. Cicero, and Professor Yankouski (Connors) as to what works best for you.

First Year Students

Students finishing their first year of the program please start looking over the information that will be on the comprehensive exam. Although the test is nine months away, time goes by fast. Dr. Massarelli sent out your review packet so you can start going over what is important to study.

Practicum Students

Students going out on practicum this fall (2017) should have your contracts to Dr. Mass signed within the next week. Once in July you may not be able to start in September due to the paper work that has to be processed by the administration. Many administrators take vacations during July and August so your paperwork could sit on someone’s desk for 2-3 weeks before it is processed.

Intern Students

Students taking the Praxis this summer should register soon. The next review meeting will be this Monday evening at 6:00 pm for a review class.

Graduating Students

Students graduating this December (2017) and next May (2018) must fill out the Application for Degree form, it is on-line or you can pick it up and fill it out at the registrar’s office. If you don’t fill out the form and submit it there will be no record of you graduating.

Dr. Mass’s hours during the summer will be in Tuesdays and Thursdays. I will be away July 15-22.

Have a nice and relaxing summer!

Welcome to 2016!

Dear Students,

Welcome to the spring 2016 semester!

Although next week is our first week of classes, all classes will be held on Blackboard. Check with your instructor about your assignments due the following week.

This semester we have a lot going on including the NASP conference in New Orleans (February 10-13th) as well as the NJASP conference scheduled for the first Friday in May.

The comprehensive exam will be held on Saturday, March 19th for all second year students in the MA program. Dr. Mass sent out a study guide back in the fall to all students. If you need another study guide feel free to email him. There will be a review held on Saturday, February 27th, at 2:00 pm. The review should only last about one hour. It is very important to be at the review since a lot of information about the exam will be presented.

Our SPLASH meetings of the new semester are scheduled for Tuesday, February 2nd and Tuesday, April 26th. We will meet at approximately 5:45 pm. Please mark these dates on your calendar.

Have a wonderful and prosperous semester!

SPLASH 2015 Holiday Party!

Please join us for the SPLASH holiday party on Monday, December 7th, from 6-7:30 pm in Jubilee Hall, third floor, room 350.

Enjoy the holiday season!

Welcome to a new semester!

Hello all,

Welcome back returning students and a special welcome to the new students!

As you are aware, the fall semester begins on Monday, August 31st.  Below are some reminders from Dr. Mass as we begin the new academic year:

1. If you are not sure where your room is located, please go to Jubilee Hall, room 309.  On the office door is the fall schedule with all the room numbers.  You can also go on-line to check your room number.

2. If you have not heard from your professor, purchase your books after the first night of class.  Although many students prefer to buy books on-line through Craig’s List, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and e-bay, check the SHU bookstore.  Over the past couple of years the books at the SHU bookstore have come down in price to keep up with the on-line competition.  You can save a lot of money buying used books.  Just make sure you check with your instructor that he/she is not using a newer edition of the book.

3. Parking decals are being sold on-line or in Duffy Hall, second floor.  The fee is 100 dollars for the year.  It will cover you until August 31, 2016.  With the part-time decal you can park anytime from 3 pm until 11 pm.  Weekends are free.

4. If you did not acquire your ID, please do so sometime this week.  Your ID has an 8 digit number attached to it.  Among other things, you will need your ID to preregister for the spring 2016 semester in November.  You can also put money into your account and use your ID card as a debit card for food and purchasing items at the bookstore.

5. Our first scheduled SPLASH (School Psychology Leadership Association at Seton Hall) meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 28th, at 6:00 PM in Jubilee Hall, room 350.  Attendance is mandatory.  If for some reason you cannot attend please see Dr. Mass and there will be a short assignment to do in place of the meeting.

6. A few of tips to have a successful semester:

1. Keep up with the readings.
2. Don’t wait until the last minute to cram for a mid-term or final exam.  Start studying 2-3 weeks before the exam.
3. Attend classes regularly.  Most instructors will take off points toward your final grade if you are out more than 2 times during the semester.

As always, both Dr. Lombardy and Dr. Mass are around if you need to communicate with them.  Email is the best way to stay in touch.

Have a pleasant and productive new semester!

Welcome to a new semester!

Hello all,

As the new semester gets underway, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. New students should be registered for your classes. Rooms will be posted on Lucy’s door in Jubilee Hall, room 309. Don’t purchase books until after the first night of your classes.

2. Students out on practicum and internship should have their contracts signed by both parties (district and SHU). If your contract is not signed you cannot go to the school district. Check in with me if there is a problem with your contract. Practicum students should start on September 2nd. Internship students may start on August 25th.

3. Our 2 SPLASH meetings this semester will be held on Monday evenings, October 6th and December 8th . Please make sure you mark these two evenings off on your calendar. Attendance is mandatory. If you cannot attend a meeting you must see me. You will have a journal article to summarize in place of attending the meeting. Please bring 5 dollars with you for dues. Meetings will be held in Jubilee Hall, room 383. We start at 6:00 PM and go until about 7:30 PM. Dinner is provided! Come with your appetite!!!

4. We will be having several workshops this semester and in the spring semester. Save the date for Wednesday evening, October 29th (6-8 PM). A friend and colleague of mine, Dr. Leslie Becker, will be presenting on “Building Secure Attachment: Integrating Self-compassion, self-awareness, and mindfulness.” This workshop will focus on counseling theory and skill building for counselors and psychologists.

Have a great start to the semester!
