The University has set each Sunday morning from 12 Midnight ET to 7 AM ET for routine maintenance of IT systems.  While most systems are available during most maintenance periods, University IT Services is working on systems during this time and systems may be unavailable during this maintenance period.  University IT Services will attempt to alert the University when major systems will be affected by systems maintenance.

To this end, please be advised that University IT Services will be performing necessary maintenance in the University’s data center during this weekend’s maintenance period.  Most systems will be unavailable this Sunday, April 21, from 12 Midnight to 7 AM.  The campus network, the SHU Web site, Blackboard and student email will remain available during this maintenance. The Storage Area Network (SAN) in the University’s data center in Corrigan Hall experienced a hardware failure on Friday, April 12.  This resulted in two system outages, the first on Friday, April 12, at 10:30 PM and the second earlier today, Saturday, April 13, at 9:30 AM.  Each outage lasted approximately three hours.  The campus network, Web site (www.shu.edu), student email, and the Blackboard Learning System were unaffected by this outage.  Most other systems experienced at least intermittent outages during these periods.  This includes MS Exchange email, PirateNet, and Self Service Banner.

The outages were traced to failed hardware in the network switch connecting the date center servers to the storage.  Working with our SAN vendor, a temporary fix has been put in place which should prevent further outages.

PirateNet was offline this afternoon beginning around 2:15 PM due to technical problems.  When services were taking longer than expected to restore, the Web Services team around 3:30 PM implemented a “crash protection” site, providing direct links to key services, including email, Blackboard and Banner Self Service (enabling users to add classes, pay bills, find their classrooms, advise students, etc.). PirateNet service was fully restored around 4:15 PM.

The annual winter IT maintenance period will take place over the winter break.  The maintenance will begin on Wednesday, December 26 at 8:45 a.m. and will end Sunday, January 13 at 7 a.m.  University IT Services will make their best effort to alert the community before a system is taken off line for maintenance; however, during this period IT systems may be off line for maintenance unexpectedly and with little advance warning.

An upgrade to the data center storage network is planned during the maintenance period. All systems except for the University Web site and the Blackboard Learning System will be affected by this planned maintenance.  Each affected system will be offline for about twelve hours as the storage for each system is upgraded.  Different systems will be scheduled for different days during the maintenance period, so most systems will be available most days, but some systems will be off line each day during the maintenance period.

More information about the winter maintenance, including a detailed schedule of when systems will be off line for maintenance, can be found at:

Yesterday morning and again yesterday afternoon (Monday, February 20) there were brief periods when Banner Self Service and PirateNet were down.  Users accessing the system in those periods received an error saying that too many users were logged on and the system could not handle more.  However, it is unlikely that the number of users actually exceeded the system capacity, since yesterday was a University holiday.  It is more likely that the process that releases system resources when a user logs out “hung”, causing the system to become overloaded with inactive users.  University IT Services technicians on cal over the holiday weekend were able to restore the systems after brief outages of approximately 30 minutes.  University IT Services is monitoring the systems carefully to ensure the problem is resolved.
