CASE Summer Internship

Hello Pirates!

We hope that you are enjoying summer break!

We are highlighting one our very own SAA members, Clare Donnelly, who is spending her summer interning at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia through the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) is the global non-profit association dedicated to educational advancement—alumni relations, communications, development, marketing, and advancement services—who share the goal of championing education to transform lives and society. CASE helps its members build stronger relationships with all these constituencies in several ways.

One of the resources that CASE offers students (undergraduate/graduate) is an opportunity to get more exposure in the world of Advancement. This opportunity allows them to gain hands-on learning experience and introduction of what it is like to have a job in development. It also opens the door for those that have not considered a career in advancement.

She has had the opportunity to network with executive leadership and has gotten an introduction to the total scope of CHOP itself, which has allowed her to get a better understanding of the importance of her work.  The first portion of her internship Clare has spent focused on Individual Giving. Each week she has had the chance to work with a different Development Associates and learn about their specific position. Throughout her three weeks she has drafted qualification letters, thank you letters, outreach letters, briefings, meeting agendas, catering menus, follow-up emails, PowerPoints, and entered data into DonorForce. That is not it, she has brainstormed and collaborated on ideas for major gifts donor engagement and was able to make calls to donors.  As she enters the next phase of her internship Clare will begin to observe the work of Corporate Foundation Relations.

On the CASE side of things, she has attended five weekly webinars so far and three voluntary webinars. She regularly meets with her CASE mentor, Bobby Dunlap who is the Director of Alumni Engagement at Northwestern University, where she completes weekly assignments for CASE, and is having virtual one-on-ones with Anita Walton, the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement at Elizabeth City State University and Karen Hamilton, the Senior Associate Director of Stewardship at University of Pennsylvania.

Overall, I have learned so, so much from my time at CHOP and CASE. I am excited to continue learning more about development and my place in the field. Everyone I have worked with and met so far has been incredible- the culture at CHOP is nothing short of amazing. As an intern I feel seen, supported, and heard, which I am extremely grateful for.
