Archiving & Copying Blackboard Courses: Out with the Old, In with the New!

On December 10, 2009, all Blackboard courses from Spring 2007, Summer 2007, Fall 2007, Spring 2008, and Summer 2008 semesters will be archived and removed from the system in order to make room for new courses. If you would like to keep material from any of your courses taught during these semesters, you will need to archive or copy them into a more current course. Click here for information on how to archive your courses.

To assist you with this process, the Computer Training Center will be offering training sessions titled Archiving & Copying Blackboard Courses on the following dates:

You may have seen or heard of computers that display numerous 'pop-up' ads and redirect your internet browser. Once installed, spyware can collect information about you or our organization without our knowledge and report the data back to a third party.

Spyware can

- Monitor your internet connection or general computer usage.
- Collect personal or confidential information that can be used for identity theft or fraud.
- Deliver unsolicited pop-up advertisements or route your web browser to advertising sites.
- Slow down your computer's response time and make it unusable.

Blackboard Exam Statistics

There are many features of the Blackboard Exam tool that faculty may find useful. One of these is the ability to examine how many students missed a particular question on a multiple choice exam in Blackboard. This item analysis ability can help to identify questions that many students missed, or that may have been entered incorrectly.

To access the statistics for a particular exam, go to the Grade Center and click on the two double down arrows for the column of interest. Select "Attempts Statistics".

The results page will display the percentage of students who selected each answer choice.

Avoid Losing Work When an MS Office Program Closes Abnormally

Sometimes a Microsoft Office program closes before you can save changes to a file you are working on. Some possible causes include:

A power outage occurs.

Your system is made unstable by another program.

Something goes wrong with the Microsoft Office program itself.

Although you can't always prevent problems such as these from happening, you can take steps to protect your work when a MS Office program closes abnormally.

Word, Excel & PowerPoint - open the application

Click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Word Options (or Excel Options - or PowerPoint Options - depending on the application).

Click Save.

Select the Save AutoRecover information every x minutes check box.

In the minutes list, specify how often you want the program to save your data and the program state.

Tip The amount of new information that the recovered file contains depends on how frequently a Microsoft Office program saves the recovery file. For example, if the recovery file is saved only every 15 minutes, your recovered file won't contain your last 14 minutes of work before the power failure or other problem occurred.

Optionally, you can change the location (specified in the AutoRecover file location box) where the program automatically saves a version of files you work on.

Save early and save often.

The AutoRecover and AutoSave features are not a substitute for regularly saving your work by clicking Save . Manually saving your file is the surest way to preserve the work you have done.

Keyboard shortcut To save a file, press CTRL+S.

How to Clear DNS Cache

Have you ever received an Error 404 on the internet? If you experience DNS (Domain Name System) errors or Error 404, first check that your network connection is fine. If so, you may need to flush the MS Windows' DNS cache. To do this, follow the steps below:

Go to start button and click RUN
Type - command - and hit the ENTER key
Type - ipconfig /flushdns - and hit the ENTER key
Type - exit - and hit the ENTER key.

MS Windows XP and Vista automatically store DNS information about websites you have visited. This loads those websites faster for future use. Sometimes the DNS cache becomes corrupted or stores unusable data. This causes errors (404 and DNS) and results in slow internet performance. By following the above steps to delete the DNS cache, your Internet performance should be restored.
