Summer IT Maintenance Schedule

To the University Community:

University IT Services (UITS) understands the importance of continued access to the University's IT systems and services. To minimize the impact of upgrades and repairs, UITS always attempts to schedule work affecting systems and services during off hours. To help the community plan for upgrades and outages, UITS has established regular maintenance periods. Weekly maintenance occurs every Sunday morning from 12:01 AM to 7:00 AM. For larger projects, UITS estblishes two annual extended maintenance periods that take place over the Christmas break and between the end of the second summer session and the start of Law School orientation.

This summer's IT maintenance window will begin Friday, August 7, at 5:00 PM EDT and will end on Monday, August 17, at 7:00 AM EDT.

Most IT systems and services will be available most of the time during that period, and UITS will always attempt to alert the University community whenever a system is expected to be down during this period. During this time, however, some systems may be brought down for extended periods and with short notice in order to facilitate major upgrades to UITS networks, systems, and services. Please plan your work accordingly.

Electrical Storm Causes Partial Network & Telephone Outage

This afternoon at approximately 1:30 PM a thunderstorm with multiple lightning strikes to campus buildings damaged some network and telephone equipment in President's Hall and Bayley Hall, creating brief telephone and network outages for parts of the campus. Most camus telephone and network services were restored by 3:30 PM. A few network switches servicing portions of President's Hall and Bayley Hall had to be repaired or replaced. Full service to these areas was restored around 5:00 PM this afternoon. Anyone experiencing continued access problems is advised to reboot thier computer and to call the Technology Help Desk at 973-275-2222 if this does not clear the problem.

University Network Upgrade Completed

This weekend University IT Services upgraded the DNS and DHCP servers on the campus network. These are critical services that enable your computer to access the Internet. Following this upgrade, the University now has redundant DNS and DHCP servers in different locations around campus, ensuring that members of the University community will have uninterrupted access to the Internet in the event one server or network link fails.

If you experience problems connecting to the Internet or to campus servers this morning, please reboot your computer, as you may have obsolete information about the campus Internet connection in your computer's memory.

Brief Internet Outage Today

Intermittant Internet Problems This Morning

Beginning approximately 8:00 AM this morning, Sunday, October 12, University IT Services began receiving reports that some campus systems were not available, including the campus Web site (www.shu.edu) and Blackboard.

Testing showed that the outage was intermittent and depended on users' Internet Service Provider (ISP). Users of Comcast and Verizon were able to access campus servers from off campus, while users of AT&T and Optimum Online were not. Blackboard login was affected by this intermittant outage.

The University's Internet vendor, Level3, identified a problem with one of their circuits, and corrected the problem. Full service was restored approximately 1:30 PM this afternoon.

Important Announcement - New Schedule for Data Center NW Upgrade

As previously posted September 15, September 25, and September 28, University IT Services will be performing a major upgrade to the data center network beginning this weekend.

Due to the amount of work required, this weekends' work needs to begin in advance of the University's normal weekly maintenance window. Except for Blackboard (myweb.shu.edu) and the University's Web site (www.shu.edu), most IT systems will be down beginning Saturday, October 4th, at 5:00 PM, through Sunday, October 5th, at 8:00 AM. Note that email and Banner will not be available during this period. Blackboard and the University's Web site will be available throughout this maintenance. Please plan your work accordingly.

We apologize for any inconvenience this extended maintenance window may cause. This upgrade is required to enable the clustering of servers to provide redundancy in the event one server fails. Providing IT services that are highly available is an objective of UITS and is increasingly expected by the University community.

Please call the Technology Help Desk at 973-275-2222 if you have any questions or concerns regarding this maintenance, or for any questions related to the University's technology systems and services.

Revised Schedule for Completion of Data Center NW Upgrade

University IT Services (UITS) has a weekly systems maintenance window each Sunday from 12:00 Midnight to 7:00 AM. UITS will always attempt to schedule systems work during this time. During this time any system may be down for maintenance without prior warning. However, UITS will always attempt to inform the University community whenever systems are scheduled to be down, even if that downtime is scheduled during the maintenance period.

Please be advised that UITS has scheduled major work on the network in the data center for the coming three weekends. The impact on University systems will be as follows:

Sunday, September 28: Some limited systems work will take place from 12:00 Midnight to 5:00 AM. Most systems will NOT be affected by this work.

Sunday, October 5: All systems except the University's Web site (www.shu.edu) and Blackboard (myweb.shu.edu) will be down from 12:00 Midnight to 7:00 AM.

Sunday, October 12: All systems except the University's Web site (www.shu.edu) and Blackboard (myweb.shu.edu) will be down from 12:00 Midnight to 7:00 AM.

Note that this is a change from the previously announced schedule to upgrade the data center network.

More information about this upgrade can be found in the September 15th blog post. Click here to go to that post.
