Literacy

Below are examples of our current Literacy PDW offerings.  We will to the best of our ability, tailor-make your PDW to help achieve specific learning goals that you identify.

 

 Writing and Research across the Curriculum

This workshop demonstrates how to apply the “DBQ (Document-Based Question) Approach” across the curriculum for grades 3-12.  The DBQ Approach is like a research paper with training wheels in that the instructor provides the materials from which students build their arguments.  This is a highly interactive workshop.  The primary objective is to review, analyze, and practice the steps of reading, research, and writing in order to design reading/research-based writing assignments for students.

Participants practice paraphrasing, questioning, and inferring with images and text, and identify ways in which they can utilize this approach with their students.  They also select a book of their choice and work through the various steps of questioning and building arguments in order to develop robust writing.  Writing and Research across the Curriculum is led by Dr. Sarah Tantillo, Seton Hall International Clinical Consultant.

Connecting Reading, Writing, and Test Prep Instruction

This workshop provides practical resources and strategies for effective literacy instruction in grades 3-12, addressing the following questions: What are the key critical reading strategies, and how do we use them to comprehend?  How can we connect reading, writing, and test-prep instruction to strengthen students’ literacy skills?

Those participating in the workshop will leave with skills to: 1) Describe and explain the four key critical reading skills (paraphrasing, inference, vocabulary in context, and finding main idea/argument) and use strategies to teach those skills; 2) Describe and explain the comprehension process, how these critical reading skills function in that process, and how important it is to access and build upon prior knowledge; 3) Teach vocabulary more effectively using the strategies presented; 4) Teach students how to annotate using the strategies and materials presented; 5) Use strategies presented to connect reading, writing, and test-prep instruction more effectively in order to improve students’ literacy skills overall; 6) Create critical reading questions based on a given passage.  Connecting Reading, Writing and Test Prep Instruction is led by Dr. Sarah Tantillo, Seton Hall International Clinical Consultant.
