You may find youreself becoming overwhelmed with what organization to choose, and how<br \/>\nto actually become engaged as a graduate student.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First, narrow down a few associations<\/strong> and explore their websites to get a feel of how they\u2019re structured. Do they match your field of<br \/>\ninterest? What upcoming events could you get engaged with?<\/p>\n<p><strong>The U.S. Department of Labor<\/strong> has a website dedicated to providing information on over 120 associations in America, here: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.careeronestop.org\/businesscenter\/professionalassociations\/find-professional-associations.aspx?keyword=higher%20education&amp;ajax=0\" target=\"_blank\">CareerOneStop<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Next, reach out to a professor, colleague, classmate, or the organization<\/strong> itself to talk about the benefits and experience of membership.\u00a0 Many associations offer student and university discounts. Your current job might even have a stipend to help pay for your professional development as well. What skills will you gain from joining?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another important research tool is engaging on social media<\/strong>. Each organization will have its own Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, or Instagram. Use these mediums to see what breaking news is being shared, what issues are important to its members, and receive the latest updates on the activities of each association. How do you see yourself interacting with your peers?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finally, attend a conference, submit an article for publication in the scholarly journal, become a presenter, participate in a webinar, or join a committee<\/strong> for the association or organization you wish to get involved with! Not only will this give you great experience, but being able to articulate your experiences at an interview will set you apart from other candidates.
