{"id":498,"date":"2015-03-24T20:36:21","date_gmt":"2015-03-25T00:36:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/hegsa\/?p=498"},"modified":"2015-03-25T13:56:27","modified_gmt":"2015-03-25T17:56:27","slug":"march-2015-masters-corner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/hegsa\/march-2015-masters-corner\/","title":{"rendered":"March 2015: Master&#8217;s Corner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>MASTER\u2019S CORNER<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>A new section of The Insider highlighting the Higher Education and Student Affairs Master\u2019s program.\u00a0 For more <\/em><em>information about the Higher Education and Student Affairs program, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shu.edu\/academics\/education\/ma-college-administration\/index.cfm\">http:\/\/www.shu.edu\/academics\/<\/a><\/em><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shu.edu\/academics\/education\/ma-college-administration\/index.cfm\">education\/ma-college-administration\/index.cfm<\/a>. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>HOW TO BE A NATURAL AT NETWORKING EVENTS<\/strong><br \/>\nHigher Education is a multi-faceted and ever-growing arena that incorporates many sectors of business and industry.\u00a0 Spring is the perfect time to socialize with colleagues, classmates, and new connections.\u00a0 If you are interested in meeting employers, alumni, and important people in our field, make sure you attend as many networking events as possible during your time in the program.\u00a0 Make the most of networking experiences by following these five tips!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Set Goals<\/strong><br \/>\nMake a plan for your target audience at the event so you can better conceptualize how to organize your time and complete your research.\u00a0 It is important to think about what you expect to accomplish while at the event.\u00a0 Do you want to meet specific employers, connect with three new employers, or get a better sense of a company\u2019s culture?\u00a0 Know what you are looking for before you walk in the door.<br \/>\n<strong>Prepare your NEWS<\/strong><br \/>\nMarket yourself to each new person you meet by putting together your elevator pitch beforehand: Name, Education, Work, and Skills (NEWS).\u00a0 Practicing your pitch ahead of time will easily allow you to engage in conversation, especially as you combine your NEWS with research about the company or organization.<br \/>\n<strong>Prepare Questions<\/strong><br \/>\nPrepare a few questions to ask at the networking event.\u00a0 Ask the professional questions like \u201cHow did you get your current job?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhat do you like most about your company?\u201d or \u201cWhat skills do you look for in your employees?\u201d to engage them in conversation and pick up some tips.<br \/>\n<strong>Rock the Professional Look<\/strong><br \/>\nLook and act the part of the professional that you are.\u00a0 Not only will this help you look confident, but more importantly, to feel confident.\u00a0 Wearing your best business attire, along with good eye contact, a firm handshake, a smile, authentic energy, and eagerness to get to know someone are all great ways to impress an employer, and yourself.<br \/>\n<strong>Stand Out from the Crowd by Following-Up<\/strong><br \/>\nAsk for the networker\u2019s business card, which will come in handy when you follow-up with an email or a hand-written note.\u00a0 Make a note of something they said on the back of the card to include when you follow up.\u00a0 If you have your own business card, be sure to produce it with confidence.<\/p>\n<p>Upcoming Networking Event:<\/p>\n<p>Big East Career Networking Event &amp;
