OBJECTIVES:  Distinguished Chairs are viewed as among the most prestigious awards in the Fulbright Program. Candidates are usually full professors, deans, department heads and eminent scholars. They bring with them distinguished records of scholarly experience, including significant publications and excellent teaching records.  Grantees will conduct teaching or a combination of teaching and research in the area of specialization. The teaching load is a maximum of two graduate or undergraduate courses a semester, with up to eight classroom hours per week. In addition to lecturing at a leading Chinese university, grantees will have the opportunity to deliver guest lectures at provincial universities. Proposals should demonstrate an interest in active collaboration with Chinese scholars and the host community to the extent possible.  Applications are sought in all appropriate disciplines, but applications in the following disciplines are preferred: Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, Public Administration, and Public/Global Health.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements unless specific exemptions are stated in individual country or award descriptions.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time of application.  Permanent resident status is not sufficient.  Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree (including a master’s depending on the field) as appropriate at the time of application. For professionals and artists outside academe, applicants must demonstrate recognized professional standing and substantial professional accomplishments.  A candidate who has resided abroad for five or more consecutive years in a six-year year period preceding the date of application is ineligible for a grant. For the purpose of this section, a candidate who has lived outside the United States for nine months or more during a calendar year is deemed to have resided abroad for that year.  Recipients of a core Fulbright Senior Scholar award (defined as longer than two months) are eligible to receive another traditional award five years after the date of completion of the previous award.
