As part of a collaborative effort with and funding from the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, \u00a0Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART), the National Institute of Justice \u00a0(NIJ) seeks creative and innovative proposals for research that examines how information \u00a0sharing, a key function of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification (SORNA) Act, may \u00a0have evolved since its implementation.<\/p>\n
Specifically, NIJ is interested in assessing how \u00a0information sharing has changed how criminal justice agents, for example, law enforcement, \u00a0public safety administrators, correctional administrators, and prosecutors, track, monitor, and \u00a0prosecute offenders; what types of information are collected and shared; how the public \u00a0accesses and uses information about sex offenders in their community; and the cost of inter- and intra-jurisdictional information sharing. This research will further the SMART Office\u2019s \u00a0mission to monitor the impact of SORNA and NIJ\u2019s goal of partnering with federal agencies to \u00a0improve knowledge and understanding of crime and justice issues through science.<\/p>\n
