Policy relevance is a broad definition that can include projects in history, popular culture and other fields outside the immediate purview of U.S. government officials. Countries eligible for research funding are: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Grants may be used for the following purposes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Travel to the selected countries to access research resources<\/li>\n<li>Refresher visits for already established research work<\/li>\n<li>Research planning with colleagues from the selected regions<\/li>\n<li>Creation of databases or research aids<\/li>\n<li>On an exceptional basis, inviting scholars from the selected regions to the United States for conferences or special collaborative projects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Applications are due April 15, 2013.
