The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Health Literacy Program encourages empirical research on health literacy concepts, theory and interventions as these relate to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ public health priorities that are outlined in its Healthy People initiative. The program supports a diverse array of research proposals, which include, but are not limited to:

  • The mix of abilities and skills required to be functionally health literate
  • Evaluating the different channels and strategies available to access and interpret health information
  • The mechanisms through which limited health literacy contributes to health disparities
  • Calculating of the cost of limited health literacy through social & organizational perspectives
  • Determining which policies & technologies support the development, implementation & effectiveness of provider training experiences
  • Assessing the efficacy of current methods of health literacy assessment

The size and scope of each award will vary according to the number of applications and the availability of funds. Applications follow the R01 funding schedule and are due annually on February 5, June 5 and October 5. For more information, see the link below:
