Understanding the Functional Contributions and Mechanisms of Type 2 Diabetes Disease-associated Variants (UM1 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications from integrative teams and individual investigators for large-scale complex multi-disciplinary Functional Genomics Projects (FGPs) to determine the contributions and mechanisms underlying the contribution of risk-associated variants and their downstream effector transcripts for type 2 diabetes (T2D). The intent is to generate knowledge and tools to enable the identification of putative biomarkers and therapeutic targets by future efforts. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and other genomic studies of T2D and its complications have found many variants that are statistically associated with disease risk, disease protection, progression to complications, or other traits. However, such studies do not show which variants in genomic elements cause these effects or how they result in differences in function. Applications submitted to this RFA will systematically identify causal variants and effector transcripts associated with all known T2D risk variants, verify the role of downstream effector transcripts, build network models that explain their role(s) in T2D and its complications, and identify key readouts and modulation points in these networks. Data, tools, and reagents generated by these projects will be released rapidly to facilitate more in-depth study by the broad scientific community. Awardees to this solicitation will form a Consortium with the Accelerating Medicines Partnership in Type 2 Diabetes Knowledge Portal awardee (AMP T2D KP; RFA-DK-19-505) to accomplish collective goals.

Low Cost Detection of Cognitive Decline in Clinical Settings (R01 Clinical Trial Required)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications to pursue validation studies of cognitive screening instruments or assessments in clinical settings and to translate these screening and assessment tools into electronic health record (EHR) systems that can assist physicians in making clinically meaningful care recommendations for patients experiencing cognitive decline. This FOA requires prior preliminary data gathered during the development of cognitive screening tools and/or assessments. This FOA will also support research to validate these tools as well as their implementation in large clinical settings. Plans for validation of cognitive impairment against relevant Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) biomarkers are encouraged but not required.

This FOA will support an R61 pilot phase (Stage I) which will allow researchers to develop and validate tools for cognitive assessment and then create scalable, tailored interventions for patients experiencing cognitive decline to help overcome barriers to uptake. If successful, researchers may transition to an R33 phase (Stage IV) for implementation of pragmatic trials. All applicants are required to address health disparities. This FOA does not require preliminary data.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to stimulate research to understand the biological basis by which environmental exposures alter brain and behavioral functioning to increase risk for psychiatric disorders with onset in late-childhood, adolescence or early adulthood. A range of approaches are encouraged, from mechanistic experiments using whole organism models or in vitro and in vivo systems to human studies that add new data collection activities and/or make use of extant data or biospecimens. Investigations that further advance our understanding of the joint contribution of genes and environment in the risk for psychiatric disorders are welcomed. Applications should address either categorically defined psychiatric diagnoses and/or continuous traits expressed in the general population. Applicants are encouraged to propose studies that consider co-occurring psychiatric conditions and potential shared etiologies. It is anticipated that knowledge gained from the research supported by this FOA will inform the development of improved intervention, prevention and/or therapeutic strategies. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) seeks applications proposing coordinated efforts to accelerate gene discovery for psychiatric disorders in cohorts of African ancestry on the African continent to advance the important goal of global mental health equity. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is one of several FOAs participating in a program called, Ending Disparities in Mental Health (EDIfy-MH ). This FOA should be used when two or more collaborating sites are essential to conduct the proposed research. It is required that the Research Strategy be identical across linked collaborative U01 applications, with the exception of a short section describing the specific function of each application under “elements unique to this site.” The Human Subjects section for each application should be specific to the research conducted at that site. For a linked set of collaborative U01 applications, each application must have its own Program Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI) and the program must provide a mechanism for cross-site coordination. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) seeks grant applications to optimally and sustainably address late-stage implementation research questions to address the delivery of proven-effective prevention and treatment interventions for heart, lung, blood, and sleep (HLBS) comorbid diseases and disorders in people living with HIV (PLHIV) in World Bank designated low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). For the purposes of this FOA, late-stage implementation research is defined as research to identify strategies to achieve sustainable uptake of proven-effective interventions in routine clinical, public health, and community-based settings and maximize the positive impact on population health. Each awarded project is to conduct late-stage implementation research within one or more of the following geographical regions: East Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. As a group, awardees will constitute a collaborative alliance for HLBS late-stage (T4) implementation research on comorbid diseases and disorders in PLHIV in LMICs with capabilities for answering research questions (within and across regions) aimed at improving population health outcomes. This FOA is intended to support research that, while carried out in LMICs, results in outcomes that apply to low-resource settings globally. As such, Foreign Institutions are eligible and encouraged to apply. This FOA utilizes a bi-phasic, milestone-driven cooperative agreement (UG3/UH3) mechanism consisting of a study start-up and needs assessment (UG3) phase with possible transition to an implementation (UH3) phase. Desalination and Water Purification Research Program: Research Projects for Fiscal Years 2020 and 2021
This FOA’s objective is to invite private industry, universities, water utilities, and other research sponsors to submit applications that address DWPR program goals and objectives at the laboratory or pilot scale studies. Funding Group I: Laboratory Scale projects are typically bench scale studies involving small flow rates (less than 2 gallons per minute). They are used to determine the viability of a novel process, new materials, or process modifications. Research at this stage often involves a high degree of risk and uncertainty. Up to $250,000 in Federal funds per proposed project will be available under this funding group for projects that can be completed within two years. Funding Group II: Pilot scale projects test a novel process at a sufficiently large scale to determine the practicality of implementing the technology at a larger scale. Pilot studies are used to generate data that can be used to estimate the operational requirements (labor, chemical addition, power requirements) of the process and to show performance with respect to finished water quality goals. Pilot scale projects are generally preceded by laboratory studies (funded previously by DWPR or others) that demonstrate that the technology works. Up to $800,000 in Federal funds per proposed project will be available under this funding group for projects that can be completed within three years. The funding will be divided by year and should be included in the proposed budget portion of the application. Funding after the first year is not guaranteed and will be made available based on adequate work completed in the previous year.

Discovery of Genetic Basis of Childhood Cancers and of Structural Birth Defects: Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Research Program (X01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
As part of the Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Research Program (Kids First), the NIH invites applications to submit samples from pediatric cohorts for whole genome sequencing at a Kids First-supported sequencing center. Applicants are encouraged to propose sequencing of existing pediatric cancer cohorts to elucidate the genetic contribution to childhood cancers, or to expand the range of disorders included within the Kids First Data Resource to investigate the genetic etiology of structural birth defects. Whole genome, exome, and transcriptome sequencing may be available for tumor or affected tissue when justified. These data, and associated clinical and phenotypic data, will become part of the Gabriella Miller Kids First Pediatric Data Resource (Kids First Data Resource) for the pediatric research community.
