| The purpose of this funding announcement is to rigorously evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of CDC’s Heads Up concussion education and awareness materials (e.g., training, toolkits) used by youth sports organizations (leagues, clubs) or high school sports. There is a strong preference for investigations targeted at youth sports organizations because of the limited evidence base developed with this population and the greater potential for a more rigorous research design.
Outcomes of interest include training and material use, policy change, knowledge and attitudes about concussion, coach and athlete behavior, and athlete health outcomes. Projects are to enhance understanding about which components of the CDC Heads Up campaign are most effective. A secondary purpose is to understand whether educational requirements (e.g., training required by state laws, which can be provided through Heads Up online courses) are sufficient to improve coaches’ behaviors, or if rule and practice changes in sports can complement the effects of education and awareness efforts.
