{"id":902,"date":"2013-11-10T09:27:17","date_gmt":"2013-11-10T14:27:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/english\/?page_id=902"},"modified":"2017-06-16T12:51:10","modified_gmt":"2017-06-16T16:51:10","slug":"syllabus-checklist","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/english\/syllabus-checklist\/","title":{"rendered":"Syllabus Checklist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Syllabus Checklist for English 1201 and 1202<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Submit your syllabus, along with two essay assignments in the form you would give to your students, to Ed Jones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Course information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Class name and number<\/li>\n<li>Where and when it meets<\/li>\n<li>Office location, number and phone ext.<\/li>\n<li>Office hours<\/li>\n<li>Statement of what the class is about (at least a paragraph, including information on core proficiencies \u2013 1201: reading\/writing &amp; critical thinking; 1202: reading\/writing &amp; information fluency ), including <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/english\/writing-outcomes-statements-for-first-year-writing\/\">Outcomes Statements<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Required texts listed, including freshman read (for 1201)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Policies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grading formula (clearly broken down with percentages; at least 50% for writing)<\/li>\n<li>late paper policy<\/li>\n<li>attendance policy<\/li>\n<li>lateness policy<\/li>\n<li>class participation policy<\/li>\n<li>Writing Center (give location and hours of Writing Center, as well as how to make appointments)<\/li>\n<li>laptop and cell phone usage policies<\/li>\n<li>plagiarism policy (attach it to syllabus)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Schedule, assignments, and due dates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>divided into weeks (or days)<\/li>\n<li>clear deadlines for rough drafts and final drafts allowing a week in between<\/li>\n<li>enough time for each assignment<\/li>\n<li>assignments should have at least a paragraph describing each<\/li>\n<li>final paper due prior to final exam day<\/li>\n<li>first draft due dates<\/li>\n<li>Readings: 2-4 per week, no more or less (unless unusual week &#8212; library orientation, in-class surveys, presentations)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Final<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mention self-assessment (just part of 1202 final)<\/li>\n<li>Include the date of the final (this is available on-line before the semester starts)<\/li>\n<li>Final paper due before the final.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Disability Statement must be included<\/p>\n<p>For English 1202:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mention theme of course (Literature and the Humanities, Literature and the Human Psyche, Literature and Public Life, Literature and Nature)<\/li>\n<li>Include at least three nonfiction readings related to the theme<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Syllabus Checklist for English 1201 and 1202 Submit your syllabus, along with two essay assignments in the form you would give to your students, to Ed Jones.
