{"id":326,"date":"2011-12-07T11:14:33","date_gmt":"2011-12-07T15:14:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/english\/?page_id=326"},"modified":"2017-06-16T12:52:34","modified_gmt":"2017-06-16T16:52:34","slug":"example-of-summarizing-a-text-using-key-concepts","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/english\/example-of-summarizing-a-text-using-key-concepts\/","title":{"rendered":"Example of summarizing a text, using key concepts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Robert Scholes wrote piece on how to watch video texts.\u00a0 To summarize it you can first write a list of key concepts in the essay, along with definitions where necessary:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>power\/pleasure of video texts<\/li>\n<li>cultural reinforcement<\/li>\n<li>myth of America itself (racial melting pot, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>story of initiation<\/li>\n<li>ideology&#8211;a set of beliefs that guides a person, an organization, a political party, a country<\/li>\n<li>critical analysis&#8211;breaking something into parts so that you better understand it<\/li>\n<li>culture = myth of America = ideology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Next you can summarize the Scholes essay by\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">connecting all the key concepts together in one paragraph<\/span>\u00a0(key concepts are italicized):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Video texts give a sense of\u00a0<em>power or pleasure<\/em>\u00a0through the visual component, but they&#8217;re especially important for how they\u00a0<em>reinforce cultural values<\/em>, such as the\u00a0<em>myth of America as the racial melting pot<\/em>, the home of the free, etc. In the Bud ad, the\u00a0<em>story of the initiation<\/em>\u00a0of the black umpire provides a powerful mechanism for reinforcing the myth of America.
