Bally’s Atlantic City hosted the NJ Charter School Association annual conference for all charter school personnel. This year the overall turnout was not as strong as it has been in past years. Yet the programming was as robust as ever and the sessions were extremely meaningful according to the participants that stopped by the Seton Hall University (SHU) booth (#202).

Speakers that were featured included the Director of Charter Schools, Detroit Public Schools Kish Verdusco and Kim Guadagno, Lt. Governor who both spoke about the growth of the charter movement both nationally and in the State of New Jersey.

The SHU Department of Education Leadership, Management and Policy was represented by Drs. Melvin Katz and Al Galloway who led a highly interactive session about the qualities of charter school leadership. Dr. Katz directed the discussion with a comparison of the daily challenges that charter school leaders are faced with compared to most traditional public school leaders. His presentation rapidly generated a bevy of comments about exactly what charter school leaders must do to navigate the shortage of staff, working without a central office to call upon for assistance while simultaneously cultivating the talents of teachers.

Dr. Katz began by asking all the participants for self-introductions. During the session about 20 participants wandered into the session and ironically most of those in attendance were administrators. Having a room full of experienced leaders fueled a discussion that allowed those with differing approaches to share their experience. It also helped those who were aspiring to leadership to ask questions about how to proceed.

One of the recent graduates of Seton Hall’s Charter School Cohort for aspiring principals attended and made a point that the discussion was rooted in the curriculum that is provided during the 22 month degree program, which is offered in SHU’s Education Leadership, Management and Policy (ELMP) program. The ELMP program recently graduated a cohort of aspiring charter school leaders in August 2014. Focusing on the goals of great school leaders the program was tailored to the needs of the charter schools in New Jersey. Aspiring Leader tells recruits about his experience in Ed Leadership program at Seton Hall University

The Education Leadership, Management and Policy (ELMP) program enrolls approximately 150 students into leadership courses each semester.   The students are distributed into cohorts, which are run in diverse ways.  Choice include: online and in-seat, fully online team and only in-seat.  The benefit of the programs is to provide full service to students who are working adults.  The ELMP program gives the busy professional who aspires to leadership responsibilities the ability to study in a convenient, cost effective, and highly respected nationally recognized program.  Our reputation as a highly rigorous program is only a partial testament given by most of our graduates.

Most of the students in the program recommend to their colleagues that they give Seton Hall University (SHU) a look.   Word of mouth has been the best and most successful recruiting tool.  On occasion one of our current students will volunteer to share his/her experience with other potential students at an event.  Recently one of our students, Paul Decker of the Camden County College Cohort 2  joined us at an info-session to share his experience with some students from his school (  ) and surrounding districts.  A testimonial from Paul is below.

On December 19, 2013, at Cumberland County Community College, Drs. James Corino and Al Galloway met with students in the University Center.  We have a video of Paul answering questions.   See the video here!

“I am currently heading into my 5th semester of Seton Hall’s Master of Arts program in Education Leadership. The program has been an extremely rewarding experience. When I decided to go back to further my education, I had accepted a new position in a new school. Adjusting to a new school and new faculty on top of pursuing a master’s degree was challenging, however the design of the program and having one course a semester being in seat, this was a perfect program for me.  Not only has this program benefited me for my future as an administrator, it has helped me as a teacher to constantly improve my instruction.”

This year the latest and most popular technological event to impact higher education is the introduction of massive open online courses (MOOCs).  MOOCs are a growing new story.  MOOCs were rumored to be a major disruption in higher education as more students choose to take courses online merely to enhance career possibilities, to prepare for college or for the sake of learning.  However, online courses with enrollments of hundreds of students do not provide the personal attention that some students require.

Seton Hall University prides itself on personal attention to all students.  Our student to teacher ratio of 12:1 is small and personable.  So, students are never left to fend for information on their own.  Professors are easily accessed on the telephone or by email.

A Seton Hall degree in education leadership will position students for jobs in all areas of administration. One online graduate commented,

“Since my graduation, I have obtained employment in a school district as an Assistant Superintendent.  This appointment was attainable due to the education I received through the ELMP program.  The curricula, and its presentation by the ELMP instructors, are beyond reproach!  It is my opinion, if an individual would like to advance in the area of Educational Leadership, Seton Hall’s ELMP program will guarantee success!!” Cherie Ludy-MAE

All graduates have passed the Praxis examination that is required for building and district level certifications.  This is a testament to the level of training that is acquired at this university.

Online courses allow students to navigate around their life situations.  Particularly, coaching responsibilities and family situations may impede driving to campus one or two nights per week.  There is also the issue of distance, which is readily solved in an online environment.

Seton Hall graduates have picked this university to seek their certifications and to learn about how to manage and lead schools because of the value offered, convenience of delivery, and competitive program cost.  In an era when the landscape of higher education seems threatened by open free online courses, Seton Hall still offers a quality education experience that rivals the mass delivery environment.

Is technology a leadership tool or hardware and software?

Seton Hall University

Among the most common educational buzz words we hear today are “diversified teaching,” “cooperative learning groups,”” instructional differentiation” and most predominately the “infusion of technology” into the learning environment.

Educators sometimes think of “technology” as hardware and software and often confuse these budget lines with “infusion of technology in the classroom”.  How mistaken they are! Technology should be considered hands on, vibrant and a vast new resource for researching, participating, teaching, learning and communicating. It is has not only replaced the print media in many vital areas but has added a dimension to research and education that can be both time saving, and efficient as well as providing the most –up to date knowledge in the field.

The utilization of the computer reaches down into the elementary grades and moves up and through to the university experience.  Not a single subject is exempt from the efficacy of computer aided instruction – whether it is Science, Math, History, English or any of the Art or Music areas.

With that in mind it is Merriam Webster’s definition of the word tool “as something (as an instrument or apparatus) used in performing an operation or necessary in the practice of a vocation or profession” that best describes Seton Hall University’s on line Education, Leadership, Management and Policy (ELMP) program. The online ELMP program now going into its tenth year, remains as one of the most popular programs in the Seton Hall University College of Education and Human Services.

The economics of education today has far reaching implications and effects.  As education scrutiny becomes more probing and assessments become more intense, many retirements of administrators and supervisors are occurring earlier and in larger numbers. These vacancies must be filled by creative educators who have the leadership skills of creating successful and effective learning environments.

Are you going to be ready to accept the challenge-of becoming a 21st century education leader?  Are you ready for the accolades given to movers and shakers of successful educational change?  If your answer to these questions is yes, then earning a Seton Hall University degree in Education, Leadership Management and Policy online may be right for you.

The Seton Hall M.A. in Education Leadership, Management and Policy (E.L.M.P.) offered through the college of Education and Human Services and SetonWorldWide, the online campus of Seton Hall University is ideal for busy teachers, coaches, music and art educators or others who are unable to attend class on campus. The online ELMP program identical to the on campus program and the online courses are taught by Seton Hall campus faculty. Two on campus weekend residencies are required.  The E.L.M.P. program leads to eligibility for Principal and Supervisor certification.  The online ELMP program meets all requirements for NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education).

An investment in education today can pay enormous dividends in personal and professional growth. Being ready and qualified to be able to answer the call for educational leadership may be in your future and the Seton Hall online ELMP program may be the answer.

Since 1856 Seton Hall University has been a catalyst for educational leadership preparing teachers and administrators to address challenges and innovations in the field of education and a graduate degree from this 150 year old institution could help you advance your career.  We welcome you to find out more about Seton Hall and be part of the next generation of educational leaders.

Info Sessions More Compelling For Seton Hall University

Jim Info Session

As I sat in the education leadership info session as I do nearly twice a month every month, I noticed a familiar fidget of a young lady sitting across from me.  After the session, I approached her.  She led off by saying that when she initially decided to attend the session, she had been certain she would not join the program.

I recalled this conversation with Tanya as we sat in my office.  She told me that she had come to the info session with the intention of simply finding out some current statics for employments and believing that it would not be the right path for her.  Little did she know that she would leave as a member of a cohort group that would issue her an Ed.S. degree in fewer than 2 years at a university that was practically in her backyard.  She eagerly mentioned that due to the affordability of the program and her new job offer as a vice principal, she would be able to pay off her federal loan in a much shorter time than she would have on her teacher’s salary.

The Seton Hall program has grown to encompass several satellite campuses around New Jersey and now hosts cohorts in community colleges in Bergen, Sussex, Camden, and Warren.  For $25,000 one can attain a degree in education leadership from a prestigious university here in New Jersey.

Tanya went on to tell me that she plans to roll her credits in the doctorate in education leadership.  The Ed.S. degree gave her a lead into the doctoral program at just the right price with quality professors and practitioners whom offer expertise and substance to make leadership relevant and meaningful.  Unexpectedly, she had been hooked from the moment she heard the passion and honest conveyance of information from Dr. James Corino, a true educator and the Director of the M.A./Ed.S. degree programs at Seton Hall University.

Come learn, come listen, come prepares to join the SHU family.  The blended program of online and in-seat instruction is unbeatable.

Spotlight on Dr. James Corino

Walking into James Corino’s office one finds a unique individual who is truly an educator at heart. His walls are decorated with information regarding the many cohorts being administered by Dr. Corino in the field of Education Leadership.

True to his character everything is in its place labeled, clipped and banded.  One can see the organizational skills which “Jim” abides by.  Staying for a few moments we hear the phone ring numerous times while hundreds of emails flood his computer.

Jim Corino’s patience and diligence allow him to take all the time needed to respond to inquiries, requests and issues that arise for and from current, graduated and prospective students.

Dr. Corino is a fabulous administrator, recruiter and teacher.  He has a long and star studded career in K-12 education. He has served as teacher, principal and deputy superintendent. He has coached basketball and football on the high school level to state championships. He is indeed the consummate educator. He can be found working 24/7 or 36/7 if it existed, recruiting and mentoring educational leaders for the 21st century in his position at Seton Hall University.

His knowledge and skill sets are complemented by his honesty, integrity and compassion for all human beings but especially for the students who enter his programs.

Seton Hall University is proud to announce the formation of Cohort 20 of its nationally acclaimed online MA degree program.  This 22-month, express program is celebrating its first score, or 2 decade, anniversary of producing education leaders through a highly respected and NCATE acclaimed online program. Well over 500 students have graduated from this program and many are serving as K-12 administrators across the metropolitan area and nationwide. Utilizing a renowned faculty of SHU professors and K-12 practitioners, this online program of 39 credits, which includes a 300-hour internship, meets or exceeds requirements in almost all states for certification as K-12 administrators. The certifications prepare you to hold supervisor, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent, director and superintendent positions. Eligibility for the praxis and other state tests are provided through the rigors of the program.

The anniversary celebration will be highlighted by testimonials coming in from former graduates of this illustrious program. SHU’s basketball team helped to celebrate with a remarkable win over Villanova University. Wow, it doesn’t get any better than that!

Requirements for this prestigious program include a bachelor’s degree, three letters of professional recommendation, an interview, a writing sample and a desire to be an educational leader. One of the major reasons for the success of this unique quality program is the cost. The tuition is only $25,150, which includes two residencies held at the Newark Airport Hilton where students meet at the beginning of the program and at the midway point of the program — both being in July — when teachers are available for a full weekend of activities and coursework.

Putting Your Money Where Your Mouth Is In Education Leadership

Seton Hall University’s Bergen 2 Cohort in Ed. Leadership embarks on their yearlong two term 600 hour internship.  Here is where the classroom theory meets the actual practice much like where the rubber meets the road. Students will observe teachers. Chair conferences, rewrite curriculum, handle disciplinary issues, work on budgets and do all the things administrators do. They will deal with real issues and develop strategies and create solutions to problems. Utilizing what they have learned they will help to create a safe, secure and innovative environment where students can learn comfortably and reach their full potential.  What a great model as they work under the tutelage of a building administrator and a mentor from Seton Hall University.  They will cap off their internship by doing 50 hours of service in a district unlike the one they work in to see how the other half lives. WOW WHAT A PROGRAM…UNMATCHED AND UNPARALLELED.
