Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison gave a personal literary eulogy at James Baldwin’s 1987 funeral on the central importance and impact of Baldwin on her life and that of other black writers, “You gave me a language to dwell in, a gift so perfect it seems my own invention.” A new millennial generation has discovered him and Baldwin has reemerged on the popular scene with the 2016 premiere of Haitian-American documentarian Raoul Peck’s I Am Not Your Negro, about his life in the civil rights movement. The documentary received a 2017 nomination in the documentary category.
