It was the first college-owned FM station in New Jersey and one of the first FM stations in the United States.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> Broadcasting on 89.5 FM, WSOU was founded on a directive by the forward-thinking and indefatigable Monsignor James Kelley, who served as president of the university from 1935 until 1949. Monsignor Kelley is credited with transforming Seton Hall University from a small college into a large and distinctive university with a burgeoning student body.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a>\u00a0 The student-run station was intended to provide experiential learning opportunities in a professionally managed radio station and continues to do so presently.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4246\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4246\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/04\/Monsignor-Kelley.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4246\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/04\/Monsignor-Kelley-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"Black and white image of Monsignor James Kelley\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/04\/Monsignor-Kelley-198x300.jpg 198w, http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2021\/04\/Monsignor-Kelley.jpg 239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 198px) 85vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4246\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monsignor James Kelley, President of Seton Hall University at the time of WSOU\u2019s founding.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The task of starting the station fell to Monsignor Gillhooly, who got WSOU up and running in under three months.\u00a0 Assisting Monsignor Gillhooly with this monumental task was chief engineer Tom Parnham who would remain at the station until his death in 1994. Center right: students disc jockeys Don Cheek, Jack Ferry and Roy Lamont.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 2009, Seton Hall University\u2019s Walsh Gallery hosted \u201cThe Loudest Rock:\u00a0 60 Years of Pirate Radio,\u201d an exhibition commemorating WSOU\u2019s 60<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary.\u00a0 The exhibition was curated by Jake Calvert, Brooke Cheyney and Katherine Fox, then graduate students in the university\u2019s Museum Professions Program. The exhibit featured artifacts including gold records, original technology such mixing boards and tape decks, as well as memorabilia from the university\u2019s collections.\u00a0 The students worked with station manager Mark Maben and engineer Frank Scafidi to create interactive exhibition components.
