Ra\u00fal Comensa\u00f1as<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Father\u00a0Comensa\u00f1as\u00a0served as a priest in Union City\u00a0and the Hudson County area, where he was active in serving the Cuban exile community.\u00a0His advocacy work\u2014including a\u00a0run for the House of Representatives\u2014 led local groups to connect exiles with immigration resources and edit Spanish language\u00a0community\u00a0newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Beyond telling the story of an extraordinary man,\u00a0this collection documents the history\u00a0of the growing Hispanic community in the Archdiocese of Newark.\u00a0The collection includes\u00a0correspondence\u00a0from\u00a0Father Ra\u00fal to his congregants,\u00a0newspapers\u00a0Father Ra\u00fal edited\u00a0documenting issues\u00a0facing the Newark Cuban-American community, and materials\u00a0from\u00a0the Republican party advocating for\u00a0Hispanic issues in the early 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The grant covers supplies to rehouse the collection in archival-grade folders and boxes that will preserve the collection for future generations, and\u00a0provides funds to hire\u00a0an archival assistant\u00a0to help SHU staff organize and describe the collection to prepare it for historians and members of the community to explore.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2821\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2821\" style=\"width: 280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/09\/comesanas-newsletter-scaled.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2821\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/09\/comesanas-newsletter-280x300.jpg\" alt=\"Image of Miami Cuban newspaper Rece\" width=\"280\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/09\/comesanas-newsletter-280x300.jpg 280w, http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/09\/comesanas-newsletter-956x1024.jpg 956w, http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/09\/comesanas-newsletter-768x823.jpg 768w, http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/09\/comesanas-newsletter-1434x1536.jpg 1434w, http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/09\/comesanas-newsletter-1911x2048.jpg 1911w, http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/09\/comesanas-newsletter-1080x1157.jpg 1080w, http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2020\/09\/comesanas-newsletter-1200x1286.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 280px) 85vw, 280px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2821\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An issue of Rece, a Miami Cuban newspaper, one of many collected by Father Comensa\u00f1as<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The department hopes to make the collection available\u00a0to the public\u00a0by Summer\u00a02021, and\u00a0plans to make the finding aid for this collection the archives\u2019 first bilingual finding aid, to make it equally available to Spanish-speaking researchers.\u00a0\u00a0The materials are approximately 50% Spanish-language, and 50% English, and the department has found a bilingual student archivist to work with the collection.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The archives gratefully acknowledges the New Jersey Catholic Historical Commission for its support of this important project, as well as the donor, Jo Welker for entrusting these materials to its care.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The William No\u00e9\u00a0Field\u00a0Archives in Walsh Library\u00a0at Seton Hall\u00a0has been awarded a\u00a0$9,400\u00a0grant\u00a0from the New Jersey Catholic Historical Commission\u00a0to process the Father Ra\u00fal\u00a0Comensa\u00f1as\u00a0Papers. &nbsp;
