the\u00a0Douai-Rheims Bible which is the English language translation of scripture\u00a0designed\u00a0specifically\u00a0for Catholic readership\u00a0from the original Latin Vulgate that was created by theologian and historian\u00a0<span lang=\"la\"><em>Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus<\/em>, or Jerome\u00a0<\/span>(345-420 AD), the present day patron saint of translators and librarians.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2128\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2018\/08\/Douay-cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"377\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/archives\/files\/2018\/08\/Douay-cover.jpg 377w, from the geographical connections to the adapted work hosted by the English University at Douai (Northern France)\u00a0and Reims, France where the Old Testament and New Testament were evaluated from the translations\u00a0made by St. Jerome centuries earlier.\u00a0 The first mass published volume was created in 1582 which featured the New Testament proper.\u00a0 This served as a prelude to the companion\u00a0Old Testament version that was published in two volumes between 1609-10 by the University of Douai.\u00a0 This particular\u00a0compilation\u00a0illustrated here\u00a0encompasses the Books of Genesis to Job (first volume) and transitions to the Psalms,\u00a0Machabees, and Apocrypha of the Vulgate (second volume) and includes source notes on the translation process via the\u00a0Hebrew and Greek versions of the Latin\u00a0Bible.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2129\" Protestant-created bibles including the King James version (1604-11) and many earlier\u00a0examples from the 16th century, the primary rationale for the creation of the Douai-Rheims Bible centered around the need by Catholics in England to create a clearly legible sacred text\u00a0as a means of helping to discourage conversion in\u00a0the face of conversion temptation brought on by\u00a0Counter-Reformation preachers\u00a0and to\u00a0clearly articulate the articles of faith in a\u00a0vernacular\u00a0that could be easily understood and\u00a0interpreted.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2130\"
