Matthew Ullrich, Leadership sophomore, was the head of this session. His Leadership group and their Leadership Council mentors began their session by discussing the website www.abovethelaw.com. Then, they focused on resume writing. Matthew noted key takeaways regarding resumes as:

Resumes are reviewed in 14 seconds. That is why it is necessary to have the most important information in the 80% zone.

Two of the most important sections of a resume are “Leadership Experience” and “Volunteer Work”.

Keep a simple format. Make sure everything is clear, concise, succinct, and consistent.

If one sentence has a period, all sentences should.

Avoid distracting, unnecessary lines, borders, and spacing.

Sales experience is always a positive asset to include since individuals are always selling something (including themselves!).

Watch spelling and word choice. Spell out all words.

It is better to utilize a various choice of verbs in your resume. For example, instead of “led”, use “manage”.

The group then centered their discussion on how a company could never have all A players. Matthew notes key takeaways from this portion of the session as:

If a person is passionate then he can be a major asset to a company.

Employers hire for a person, not a position. Even if a person is not right for a position he could be right for the company.

An individual is never being hired for himself; he is being hired for a team. One must know the team to know if the individual will fit in.

Passion comes from within. If an individual is a passionate person then he could bring that passion to whatever he does.

It is important to be a passionate person because employers will see that and be more likely to consider the individual as a candidate to hire.

It is important to be a team player and to be able to get along with all types of personalities.

Find your passion! Try to step out of your comfort zone to meet new people and get new experiences.

The first Group Mentoring session of the Fall 2012 semester occurred last Tuesday, October 2nd.
