{"id":367,"date":"2011-10-09T19:20:30","date_gmt":"2011-10-09T23:20:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/cld\/?p=367"},"modified":"2011-10-13T19:20:49","modified_gmt":"2011-10-13T23:20:49","slug":"three-minute-leadership-not-quite-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/StillmanLeaders\/2011\/10\/three-minute-leadership-not-quite-yet\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Minute Leadership: Not Quite Yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To: The Great Leaders Who Have a Passion for Continuous Learning<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Robert Fulghum in his book, <em>It Was on Fire When I Lay Down on It<\/em>,\u00a0introduces us\u00a0to a wonderful Indonesian word, <em>belum<\/em>.\u00a0 In a world in which the absolutes of \u2018yes\u2019 and \u2018no\u2019 demand a binary answer, <em>belum<\/em> provides an alternative response, one\u00a0that implies \u201ccontinuing possibility.\u201d\u00a0 <em>Belum<\/em> means \u201cnot quite yet.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What beauty and richness this word adds to the leader\u2019s life, allowing\u00a0room for\u00a0continued exploration,\u00a0new avenues\u00a0and\u00a0yet unfolded\u00a0possibilities.\u00a0 Fulghum offers\u00a0us\u00a0some examples:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Is this the best of all possible worlds?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Belum<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Is the world coming to an end?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Belum<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Will we live happily ever after?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Belum<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0Let\u00a0us take this magnificent new word, add it to our vocabulary and ask our own questions:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Have my greatest dreams already been realized?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Belum<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Have I done all that I can in helping others realize their dreams?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Belum<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Have I given up on the person\u00a0in whom I was losing hope?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Belum<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Have I given up hope\u00a0of\u00a0finding the job that will give purpose to my life?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Belum<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>For\u00a0 truly great leaders the question is: Have I given my all in creating the best of all possible worlds for my business, family, community and those whom I serve?\u00a0 Assuredly, with a powerful, joyous and excited voice they will cry: <em>Belum! Belum! Belum!<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0They live the words of Pearl S.
