In his 2005\u00a0TED<\/a>\u00a0presentation,\u00a0Why Did I Ski to the North Pole<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0Ben Saunders<\/a>, pioneering polar explorer and record-breaking long-distance skier, shares his incredible journey.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIt is a journey that is right at the limit of human capability<\/em>,\u201d he says, \u201c\u2026\u00a0the equivalent of 31 marathons back to back<\/em>.\u201d The \u201cwhy\u201d of doing this magnificent journey he explains:<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, this is about exploring human limits\u2026. And it\u2019s also about potential on a personal level\u2026 a chance to explore the limits \u2013 really push the limits of my own potential, see how far they stretch. And on a wider scale, it amazes me how people go through life just scratching the surface of their potential, just doing three or four or five percent of what they\u2019re truly capable of<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Great leaders\u2019 sense of purpose in life drives their pursuit to explore their limits. They embrace with passion the words of\u00a0Og Mandino<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cI am here for a purpose and that purpose is to grow into a mountain, not to shrink to a grain of sand. Henceforth will I apply ALL my efforts to become the highest mountain of all and I will strain my potential until it cries for mercy.\u201d \u201c<\/em>ALL my efforts\u201d is their choice, their decision to stretch and relentlessly challenge their limits.\u00a0Wilma Rudolph\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0said:\u00a0\u201cNever underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. The potential for greatness lives within each of us.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Saunders concluded his remarks saying:\u00a0\u201cI have a school report. I was 13 years old, and it’s framed above my desk at home. It says, \u2018Ben lacks sufficient impetus to achieve anything worthwhile.\u2019 I think if I’ve learned anything, it’s this: that no one else is the authority on your potential. You’re the only person that decides how far you go and what you’re capable of.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0It is the great leaders\u2019 choice, their sacred decision to become that highest mountain, to be more than they ever dreamed they could be. They have chosen to \u201cjust do it.\u201d May you explore your human limits\u2026 and have fun doing it.<\/p>\n
