{"id":2265,"date":"2014-12-15T17:44:08","date_gmt":"2014-12-15T22:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/StillmanLeaders\/?p=2265"},"modified":"2014-12-15T17:44:08","modified_gmt":"2014-12-15T22:44:08","slug":"three-minute-leadership-together-we-have-no-gaps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/StillmanLeaders\/2014\/12\/three-minute-leadership-together-we-have-no-gaps\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Minute Leadership: Together We Have No Gaps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To:\u00a0\u00a0The Great Leaders Who Have a Passion for Continuous Learning<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Donne\">John Donne\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0words: \u2018<em>No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continue, a part of the main<\/em>\u201d capture for great leaders the need for synergy among people, organizations and communities if progress and change are to be realized.\u00a0\u00a0As\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_Covey\">Stephen Covey<\/a>\u00a0said &#8230; it is the beautiful individual growth from dependence to independence and, finally, interdependence that maximizes our contributions and value to each other. \u201c<em>It is a choice<\/em>,\u201d he wrote, \u201c<em>that only independent people can make<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0It is in this that the rich diversity of ideas and perspectives find their connectedness and exponential value. Magnificent mosaics are created when the individual pieces come together, and even the absence of one small select piece can decrease its value.<\/p>\n<p>In his book,\u00a0<em>The Power Principle<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/motivationalquotes.com\/People\/blee.shtml\">Blaine Lee<\/a>, a founding Vice President of the Covey Leadership Center, recounts a story from the first\u00a0<em>Rocky\u00a0<\/em>movie when Rocky proposes to Adrian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>This is a simple but authentic love scene,\u201d he writes, \u201cAlthough it is a little rough, Rocky looks at her and at this stage she appears homely and shy. Rock says, \u2018 Adrian \u2013 you have gaps.\u2019 And she\u2019s crushed \u2013 this about destroys her. Is it her personality? Her education: Her figure? Her teeth?\u00a0\u00a0\u2018But,\u2019 he continues, \u2018I have gaps too, but together we have no gaps\u2026 no gaps.\u2019 Look what we can do together.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Great leaders recognize that they have \u201cgaps\u201d. They seek out and value the rich differences that others bring to the table to help them close these gaps.
