{"id":2039,"date":"2014-08-05T01:26:37","date_gmt":"2014-08-05T05:26:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/StillmanLeaders\/?p=2039"},"modified":"2014-08-05T01:27:34","modified_gmt":"2014-08-05T05:27:34","slug":"three-minute-leadership-leader-as-mentor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/StillmanLeaders\/2014\/08\/three-minute-leadership-leader-as-mentor\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Minute Leadership &#8211; Leader as Mentor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To:\u00a0 The Great Leaders Who Have a Passion for Continuous Learning<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a recent blog, <em>Peter Drucker\u2019s 9 Functions of a Mentor<\/em>,\u00a0 Dan Rockwell captures the great leader\u2019s responsibility to grow and develop others \u2013 to see in others what they do not see, their incredible gifts, talents and potential, and help them bring it out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><em>Define the landscape<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; Focus on details to get things done; see the landscape to plot a course.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Expose \u2018white space\u2019 \u2013 define opportunities \u2013 what is needed now<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; Passion disconnected from meeting needs is wasted. Sincerity is not enough.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Clarify strengths and capacities<\/em><\/strong> -Tapping untapped strengths represents new directions, deeper fulfillment, and greater fruitfulness.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Identify incorrect assumptions. <\/em><\/strong><em>&#8211;<\/em> Listen for limiting beliefs.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Encouragement to \u2018go for it.\u2019 <\/em><\/strong><em>&#8211;<\/em>Inspire action. Dreaming big is only a beginning. Dreams without action drain vitality and affirm helplessness.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Help sort out the right strategies &#8211; <\/em><\/strong>Bring strategic thinking to your personal strengths and individual passions.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Affirm results<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; Success creates focus, fuels motivation, and confirms direction.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Point out wasted effort <\/em><\/strong><em>&#8211;<\/em> Stopping is harder than starting. One the most challenging lessons in leadership is learning that trying harder doesn\u2019t work, if you\u2019re stuck. Mentors point out spinning wheels and flying mud.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Establish \u201cgentle accountability\u201d<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; Accountability in mentoring relationships is an agreement. It\u2019s not imposed by dictatorial mentors.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>(Author\u2019s note: The 9 functions of a mentor are adapted from, \u201cDrucker &amp; Me,\u201d by Bob Buford. Drucker did not\u00a0list these 9 functions. They emerged in the mentoring relationship.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These mentoring functions are the beautiful gifts great leaders give to those they serve in their professional and personal life. They inspire the mentored to explore within, understand themselves and what they seek, clarify and challenge and assume ownership. Mentors a gentle guides to self-discovery opening other\u2019s eyes to new possibilities through sharing their experiences and learnings and pushing and challenging them to grow beyond what they think possible.\u00a0 As Jeffrey Pfeffer, the Thomas D.
