She is a lively, down-to-earth woman who spoke about the need for self-confidence, work-life integration, and her career journey which held so many lessons with each and every detail.<\/p>\n<p>On behalf of the Women&#8217;s Leadership Program, they would love to share her incredible insights with all those who unfortunately could \u00a0not attend so that these learnings can reach a broader audience and hopefully impact their lives just as it did for the attendees.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you, Rosalie, for enlightening us and passing on the secrets to your legacy and success! We only wish you the best on your endeavors!<\/p>\n<p><em>Attached below are the notes from Rosalie Mandel&#8217;s speech on October 2nd, 2013:<\/em><\/p>\n<h1>I. Self confidence &#8211; how you see yourself\/your self-esteem<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>Always show you are confident even when you are not<\/li>\n<li>Dress for success \u00a0&#8211; have executive presence\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s how we behave, our body language, how we speak, what we say<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>When you walk in room \u2013 everybody should turn to see you and want to know who you are<\/li>\n<li>Having no confidence has ruined both men and women\u2019s careers<\/li>\n<li>Keep positive people around you<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t say \u201csorry\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Confidence helps you stand out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Men always show confidence \u2013 if there is a job opening- a man would grab the opportunity even if he only had 1 out of 10 qualifications.\u00a0 A woman would go for it even if she had 9 out of 10 qualifications.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Confident behaviors<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;&gt; Compare<\/p>\n<p><b>Do<\/b><\/p>\n<p>What you believe is right.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t change your behavior based on what others think.<\/p>\n<p><b>Do<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Take risks and go the extra mile.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t stay in your comfort zone.<\/p>\n<p><b>Do <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Admit your mistakes and learn from them.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t cover them up or try to fix it.<\/p>\n<p><b>Do <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Accept a compliment \u2013 say \u201cThank you\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t brush it off as it was nothing.<\/p>\n<p><b>Key<\/b>: even if you are not confident, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">always<\/span> show it!<\/p>\n<p>This takes time \u2013 it\u2019s not a revolution, it\u2019s an evolution.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>II. Corporate culture and how to navigate it in achieving a highly successful professional personal career<\/h1>\n<p><b>Culture<\/b> makes a difference<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Culture is key especially for women.<\/li>\n<li>Join a firm that has a good culture:\n<ul>\n<li>Flexibility<\/li>\n<li>Open door policy<\/li>\n<li>Able to speak up and not worry about your career<\/li>\n<li>Politics: it\u2019s needed and can help you succeed if you know how to play the came and find your sponsors<\/li>\n<li>Sponsor &#8211; Tell your sponsor only the good<\/li>\n<li>Mentor \u2013 Tell your mentor the good, bad and ugly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Politics<\/b> go against our moral code; we want to be straight shooters but politics is how power is managed.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not optional.<\/p>\n<p>Women are good at it because it\u2019s about <b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">managing relationships and \u201cgetting the job done\u201d.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Relationships<\/span>&#8211; women are great with clients, vendors, peers but not so much with those above us.<\/p>\n<p>Some say, it\u2019s:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lack of confidence<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lack of sponsorship<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Tips to flex your political muscle<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Make a map<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li>Most organizations have an informal social network &#8211; Just like a\u00a0 corporate hierarchy<\/li>\n<li>Chart out peer groups that have influence<\/li>\n<li>Get to know them and their spheres of influence &#8211; they can help you.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Cash in your chips<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Women don\u2019t like to ask for favors or trade on relationships.<\/p>\n<p>We may use it occasionally but don\u2019t see it as a key exercise in leadership.<\/p>\n<p>We fail to seek out powerful people and cultivate favors as a demonstration of leadership potential.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Campaign for your career<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>We keep our heads down and get the work done.<\/li>\n<li>We won\u2019t be asked or selected for those high level jobs without building a coalition.<\/li>\n<li>Campaign as if you are running for office.<\/li>\n<li>Articulate a perspective, create a platform and line up sponsors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is not possible to opt out of the political game and get to the highest levels of an organization.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Critical success factors<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Coming out of college<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Technical &#8211; be great at what you do<\/li>\n<li>Work hard<\/li>\n<li>Be hungry \u2013 have a drive, a motivation, a desire<\/li>\n<li>Be connected- relationships are what women are great at<\/li>\n<li>Self-learner- get out of comfort zone<\/li>\n<li>Be mentored and be a mentor<\/li>\n<li>Be a value creator- stand out<\/li>\n<li>Raise your hand- take the opportunity<\/li>\n<li>Persevere no matter what comes your way<\/li>\n<li>Persistent- never give up<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Sheryl Sandberg &#8211; Lean In<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Lean into your career and don\u2019t take your foot off the gas pedal before you really need to<\/li>\n<li>Make your partner and true partner<\/li>\n<li>Sit at the table<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I have a son and a daughter. \u00a0I want the same for both of them \u2013 they both should be successful and be recognized in their careers and they both should be successful and fulfilled in their personal lives.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Close<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>I see some incredible women out there right now.<\/p>\n<p>You wouldn\u2019t be here if you weren\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight I have give you some tools to think about and apply.<\/p>\n<p>Society needs you.<\/p>\n<p>I need your help to change corporate America.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As many have already heard, a small group of Leadership Development Honors Program students have created the Women&#8217;s Leadership Program whose core mission is to give opportunities, educate, and empower&hellip;
