{"id":1560,"date":"2013-10-06T19:20:23","date_gmt":"2013-10-06T23:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/StillmanLeaders\/?p=1560"},"modified":"2013-10-06T19:20:54","modified_gmt":"2013-10-06T23:20:54","slug":"three-minute-leadership-the-power-of-love","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/StillmanLeaders\/2013\/10\/three-minute-leadership-the-power-of-love\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Minute Leadership: The Power of Love"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\">To:\u00a0 The Great Leaders Who Have a Passion for Continuous Learning<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\">In a recent SmartBrief Leadership article,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/smartblogs.com\/leadership\/2013\/08\/01\/21st-century-leadership-learnings-from-2500-years-ago\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"color: windowtext\">21st-Century Leadership Learnings from 2,500 Years Ago<\/span><\/i><\/a>, Deb Mills-Scofield, writes about the virtues that Aristotle suggested as a guide to a \u201chappy life\u201d:\u00a0 courage, faith, hope, love, prudence and temperance.\u00a0 Her words on Aristotle\u2019s definition of love captured me:\u00a0 \u201c Aristotle defined love in three ways: Eros (passion), Philos (friendship) and Agape (sacrifice, servant leadership).\u201d She related them to their application in business as: \u201cVoice of the Customer,\u201d \u201cVoice of the Employee\u201d and \u201cVoice of the Community.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\">The metaphor is powerful and poignant, for it is love in its deepest and most beautiful sense that inspires great leaders: their love for what they do (passion), their caring, valuing and respect for whom they serve (friendship) and their service to others in helping them find their fullest potential to achieve their own greatness sacrifice and servant leadership). Saint Augustine wrote: \u201cLove is the beauty of the soul.\u201d It is in\u00a0<i>being<\/i>\u00a0love, that\u00a0<i>doing<\/i>\u00a0flows so beautifully and naturally. We learn the joy and exhilaration of its power and inspiration from these words.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u201cWhere there is love there is life.\u201d\u00a0 Mahatma Gandhi, Indian leader\u00a0<i>(Eros)<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u201cLove is like a friendship caught on fire.\u201d\u00a0 Bruce Lee, actor (<i>Philos<\/i>)<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;font-size: small\">\u201cLove is life.
