{"id":1248,"date":"2013-04-08T11:57:33","date_gmt":"2013-04-08T15:57:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/cld\/?p=1248"},"modified":"2013-04-08T11:59:16","modified_gmt":"2013-04-08T15:59:16","slug":"three-minute-leadership-change-reality-vs-perception","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/StillmanLeaders\/2013\/04\/three-minute-leadership-change-reality-vs-perception\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Minute Leadership: Change &#8211; Reality vs Perception"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>To:\u00a0 The Great Leaders Who Have a Passion for Continuous Learning<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Wayne Dyer, author and motivational speaker, wrote:\u00a0 \u201cChange the way you look at things and the things you look at change.\u201d\u00a0 Great leaders find great value in his words.\u00a0 They realize that sometimes it is important, not so much to change a reality, but rather change the perception of that reality.\u00a0 As Luc de Brabandere said: \u201cIndeed, your business is one thing, but the way you look at it is another \u2013 and too many people forget this sometimes crucial second half of the change process.\u201d In his article,\u00a0<i>The Forgotten Half of Change<\/i>, he shares the following drawing to help leaders understand the two facets of their leadership: the business\u2019 reality as they wear their management hat, and the perception of the business as they wear their leadership hat.<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12px\">He asks us to turn the drawing slowly upside down and says:\u00a0 \u201cWhen the rotation is modest, your perception of the drawing doesn\u2019t change.\u00a0 But turn it a little more, and what you\u00a0 see is totally different \u2013 even though the \u2018reality\u2019 of the drawing hasn\u2019t changed at all.\u201d Even when it is looked at without shifting the paper, there is another reality seen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12px\">The challenge for great leaders is to bring value-added change by seeing the world differently, not only as it is, but also in the infinite possibilities that exist when seen through different eyes.\u00a0\u00a0 Choose always to stand in the other person\u2019s shoes.\u00a0 Choose always to \u2018seek-to-understand.\u2019 Open you mind and heart to what can be.
