Anthony Pescetto, Class of 2016, Awarded John P. Deehan Scholarship

On Friday, September 18th, the Stillman School of Business hosted an intimate award ceremony and breakfast for the four recipients of the John P. Deehan scholarship. Family and friends gathered for the special event to celebrate the students and professor John P. Deehan’s legacy. Among the honorees was the Leadership Development Honors Program’s very own senior, Anthony Pescetto.

The John P. Deehan scholarship has been presented to Stillman students for over a decade. Applicants were required to reflect on the the following prompt:

John P. Deehan was a true son of Seton Hall University and one of the Stillman School’s most beloved professors.  Professor Deehan earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees, in accounting, at Stillman.  After working ten years as an accounting professional, Professor Deehan began a forty-year career in teaching and administration.  Through his dedication to educational excellence and his active servant leadership, he positively impacted the lives of thousands of students, colleagues and community members.  We celebrate Professor Deehan’s legacy by awarding this scholarship to deserving Stillman students. Think about the achievements and contributions you hope to make in the future. What are the three (3) things for which you would most like to be remembered?

Anthony Pescetto, a resident assistant on campus and co-founder of Leadership 102, wrote a realistic, thoughtful, and heartfelt plan for his legacy. Below is an excerpt from his self-reflection on the application:

“I am a caring person, who has his own values and wants to help others find their own path so that they can make the best choices for their futures. This is who I am and how I want to do it is by sharing my successes [as a professor], building my community, and strengthening my family. There is no greater feeling than knowing that you made the world a better place for those around you and those to come after you.”

During the ceremony the students were given the opportunity to share their stories and aspirations for the future discussed in their submissions. Each recipient touched on one or more of the 4 values John P. Deehan was remembered for: teaching, servant leadership, family, and community. Deehan family members were present and met with the scholars throughout the morning. John P. Deehan is survived by his wife, seven children, and twenty-two grandchildren.
